About this model
A cutaway of a generic human cell about 14 µm across, drawn in micrometres. Organelles have about their real sizes, but a real cell holds many more of them (and millions of ribosomes); we drew fewer so you can see inside. Molecules (ribosomes, membrane lipids, motor proteins, DNA) are enlarged 2–20× so you can see them, and in those close-ups the scale bar gives their real size. Colours are illustrative: most of a real cell is transparent.
