小管不断摇摆，时不时会有一根新的小管长出来，与网络连接，之后又重新脱开：内质网网络在不断地自我重塑。
内质网中不带核糖体的部分，是一张由小管构成的网，小管在三向连接处彼此交汇。它合成细胞的大部分膜脂；在产生激素的细胞中，它还合成类固醇。
在肝细胞中，它布满了能使药物和毒素失效的细胞色素 P450 酶。在每个细胞中，它都充当着钙库。
