U kadru
Cevčice se njišu, a s vremena na vreme izraste nova, poveže se s mrežom i kasnije se ponovo odvoji: mreža ER-a se neprestano preuređuje.
Deo ER-a bez ribozoma je mreža cevčica koje se sastaju u trokrakim čvorovima. Pravi većinu membranskih lipida ćelije, a u ćelijama koje luče hormone pravi i steroide.
U ćelijama jetre prepun je enzima citohroma P450 koji neutrališu lekove i otrove. U svakoj ćeliji služi kao rezervoar kalcijuma.

Ako jetra nekoliko dana dobija fenobarbital, njen glatki ER se umnožava dok ne preovlada u citoplazmi i tako pojača detoksikaciju.
