每种颜色标示一对染色体，其中每一条各自占据一片疆域，就像染色体涂染显微图像中那样。颜色更深、更粗的片段是异染色质，沿核被膜和核仁排布。这是一个女性细胞（XX）：其中一条 X 染色体被关闭，并紧缩成贴着核被膜的致密巴氏小体。RNA 和核糖体组件经核孔源源流出，蛋白质则源源流入。

细胞核容纳着基因组：约 63 亿个 DNA 字母，首尾相连可长达 2 米，却被装进一个直径 5～10 µm 的球体中。其中超过三分之一位于沉默、紧密包装的区段（异染色质）中，这些区段贴附在核纤层上；核纤层是由核纤层蛋白细丝构成的一层薄网，衬在核的内侧。

它由两层膜包裹，膜上有数千个孔贯穿。每个核孔都是由约 30 种蛋白质构成的环，把两层膜连接在一起，其内侧还连着一个篮状结构。在核内，细胞决定哪些基因被转录成 RNA，从而决定自己会变成什么、做什么。
